The way leaders communicate change influences how people work through the barriers of change. We have found that some of the leaders communicate change to others. Accountable leadership relies on executing strategic actions consistently and effectively. To do so, leaders cannot act alone; teams need to be brought along as well. The essence of leadership is creating a work environment in which people are inspired to work together to achieve a common goal. So a primary responsibility of all education leaders is to build and guide teams to achieve defined goals that lead to high levels of student achievement and success.

A skill that leaders need to have to create highly productive and reliable organizations is effective communication on why change is needed. Teams want to know why a particular goal is important and why particular tactics and process-improvement strategies are needed to help them achieve the goal. The better the why is explained, the better the compliance and execution.
