We at Studer Group came up with an exercise that helps us get to where we are going. It is not a performance conversation- well, it is, but more than that, it is a value conversation. We ask organizations, “On a scale of 1 to 10, how value-driven are you as an organization?”
We generally ask people to vote on the answer to this question. If it’s a group with executives present, we ask the executives not to raise their hands, because people tend to watch them or feel they’re being watched by them. The idea is to make sure people are comfortable enough to be honest.
Before the vote, we explain that a 10 means you fulfill your mission statement and live your values. For example, at Studer Group, a 10 would mean that you’re a good team player, treat people with respect, have high integrity, are generous, like to learn, like to teach, and understand measurable achievement. Those are the Studer Group values.
