We celebrate successes every day; today, we celebrate with our TeacherReady colleague, Tatiana who is from Peru, and who was one of sixty-eight people from more than 30 different countries becoming a U.S. Citizen.
During the ceremony a seventh grader from J. H. Workman Middle School in the Escambia County School District read her essay on “What it means to be an American.” One portion of her essay highlights freedom:
Here in America we have freedom. Freedom of speech and freedom of religion. We can say what we want. We can believe what we want. You can believe in not eating meat or drinking dairy. Because you’re in America, it’s okay. America does not judge what you look like or what you believe in, because here in America we are all equal. No one person over-powers another.
To be an American is a dream. For some people, they live their lives with war and rage. They might not want to go into war, but they don’t have a choice. Here in America we can grow up and be whatever we want to be. We can say what we want or believe what we want. We can even dress however we want, because we have rights, and choices, and freedom… To be an American is a dream come true.
Tatiana’s recognition came when U.S. District Judge M. Casey Rodgers read her name; here it is along with additional photographs from the day!
We echo the words of Judge Rodgers:
Today, America welcomes you, just as she has for 200 years to millions of Americans before you. With you comes a wonderful, cultural diversity. America does not want you to leave that culture behind. That culture is what has made our country as wonderful and unique as it is.
Join us as we celebrate our colleague, Tatiana, and the 67 others including 11 active-duty military service members, who took the oath of citizenship today.
