ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION

Empower the Board to Lead through Challenges

If this happens, what is our plan?

School board members are educational leaders who face tough questions and divisive issues as they serve their communities. Individual board members may have never experienced the strength of public division that they confront right now. In this roundtable, Dr. Melissa Matarazzo shares how to support your board members to sustain themselves and serve effectively during times of community division.

In the roundtable and the discussion, Melissa shared a scenario involving board members and administrators receiving negative feedback from their community on a new policy before an upcoming board meeting. She asked attendees to discuss what they would do and how they would handle this particular scenario with their board. Melissa also challenged district leaders to think about:

    • What can leaders do to empower their board members?
    • What actions can board members take during challenges?
