Some problems are serious enough that we need to explore everything that could be causing them. Addressing one part of a problem while ignoring other factors may cause the problem to recur. A Fishbone Diagram is a cause-and-effect approach to solving a problem. It requires teams to identify the problem, identify the factors that might contribute to the problem, identify possible causes, and investigate and test which of these causes is most likely to contribute to the problem. As teams go through these steps, members diagram the factors and the root cause as a way to create a visual for the problem at hand.
